Instagram – the mobile photo networking & sharing app serving more than a billion active users a month has opened up a new avenue for marketing.
Pepsi’s #Summergram campaign allows users to take pictures with soft drinks and share it. Users could see Augmented Reality content by simply scanning the soft drink bottles or cans. The new Augmented Reality feature in Instagram made it possible for Pepsi to capture a new channel of marketing for the younger generation.
Pepsi is now launching events in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami, Each event featuring a different six-story tall inflatable in nearby water bodies. The same will be available as filters on their Instagram where users can use them for their photos.
For the rest of the US, the labels of more than 200 single-serving bottles of Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Zero Sugar will feature QR codes that consumers can scan with their smartphones to summon special augmented reality filters via Instagram for iOS and Android.
Todd Kaplan, vice president of marketing at Pepsi, in a statement said – We are so excited to work with Instagram and bring some of their newest technology directly to our most loyal consumers. We know our fans love sharing their favorite moments on social media, and the summertime lends itself to so many post-worthy moments and occasions.
Pepsi claims customers will be able to unlock the thousands of AR camera effects related to summertime like swimming, hiking, etc. Pepsi made many AR features to ensure that “there is something for everyone – no matter what you are doing.”
